A peer at a pier

Brighton has a pier and a half
Or perhaps a hove.
The broken half-pier
Is not usefulness;
You can’t walk along it.
It just stands there in the sea
And gives a focus,
Something to peer at –
A marine sculpture
In a flat seascape;
Black, metallic beauty
Against changing light.

Starlings love it
And so do I.

Brighton 2012

Ornithology’s an art –
Appeals to young and old.
So Grandpa introduced it,
Gave Jaime ‘bins to hold.
Gazing through binoculars
Really makes you stare.
Grandpa shouted “goldfinch”!
Jaime – “silver chair”!

On Thakeham Hill
The oak is bare;
Wintry sunlight lances low.

They stand, a spellbound
watching pair
And share one shadow
on the snow…
